Xbox Series X Overheating: Thermal Paste Replacement Cost and Fix

By the OG Repairs workshop team, LondonPublished 4 min read

How much is an Xbox Series X thermal paste replacement?

At OG Repairs an Xbox Series X thermal paste replacement is £74.99, as part of the full overheating repair: strip-down, dust cleared from the heatsink and fan, old paste scraped off and fresh thermal paste applied. The Xbox Series S is £64.99. Bench time is 2-3 hours, and every repair has a 12-month warranty.

Heatsink fins clogged with dust, as we find them inside overheating consoles on our bench

Key facts

  • Xbox Series X and Series S use thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink, not liquid metal like a PS5.
  • Most Series X overheating is dust packed into the heatsink and fan, plus paste that has dried out. Both are inside the console.
  • A loud Xbox fan is usually the console working flat out to shift heat, and the overheating repair is what quietens it.
  • Microsoft designed the Series X to run stood up or lying down. What matters is clear space around the big vent.
  • Console repairs are UK only: London drop-off by appointment or UK mail-in, with a free tracked return.

Signs your Xbox Series X is overheating

  • An on-screen warning that the console is too hot, asking you to check where it's placed.
  • It switches itself off mid-game, usually in demanding games.
  • The fan is loud even on the home screen, or gets louder month by month.
  • The air coming out of the top vent is very hot, not just warm.

One warning on a hot day with the console in a cabinet isn't a fault. The same warning every week with plenty of space around it means the cooling inside isn't keeping up.

Why does an Xbox Series X overheat?

Usually dust packed into the heatsink fins and fan, and thermal paste that has dried out over the years. The Series X pulls air in underneath and pushes it out of the big vent on top, so a closed cabinet, or anything sitting on that vent, makes it worse. If it overheats with plenty of space, the cause is inside.

What a thermal paste replacement involves

  1. We diagnose first: fan, heatsink, paste and anything else we spot. If it needs more than you booked, we tell you and wait for your OK.
  2. The console is stripped down to the cooling assembly.
  3. Packed dust comes out of the heatsink fins and off the fan blades.
  4. The dried paste is scraped off the processor and fresh thermal paste goes on.
  5. It's rebuilt and tested under load before it goes back, with photos or video of the work on request.

This is the internal service. Our ultrasonic exterior clean is a different, cosmetic job for the shell and panels, and it does nothing for temperatures. You can have both done in the same visit.

Xbox Series X£74.99Thermal paste
Xbox Series S£64.99Thermal paste
Xbox One X£49.99Thermal paste
Xbox One S£49.99Thermal paste

The same job on every console: dust out, fresh thermal interface, tested. The PS5 gets liquid metal because that's what Sony designed it around.

Loud fan: new paste or a new fan?

Book the overheating repair. A loud Xbox fan is almost always the fan running flat out because heat can't get through a dusty heatsink and dried paste. The technician checks the fan while the console is open, and if the fan itself has failed, they quote a replacement before doing anything extra. No fix, no fee.

How long does it take?

The repair takes 2-3 hours on the bench. Standard turnaround is 1-3 working days once the console is with us, dropped off or posted. Same day is possible with our priority service: a priority fee applies, and it depends on the fault, parts and how busy the workshop is, so ask the team when you book.

Posting it from elsewhere in the UK? Add a prepaid Royal Mail tracked label at checkout and you get a QR code to show at any Post Office, so there's nothing to print. It comes back to you tracked, free. When we're very busy a repair can take up to 7-10 working days, and we'll tell you if so.

What you can do at home first

  1. Give it space, especially above the top vent. Take it out of closed cabinets.
  2. Don't stand anything on the vent: no games, no headset, no soundbar.
  3. With it unplugged, hoover the outside of the vents gently with a brush attachment.
  4. Don't blast compressed air into the fan. It spins the fan far faster than it's made for and pushes dust deeper into the fins.

Still hot or loud with plenty of space around it? The dust and the paste are inside, and that's the repair.

Hot, loud or shutting down?

Xbox Series X thermal paste FAQs

Should an Xbox Series X stand up or lie flat?

Either. Microsoft designed it to work both ways, and it uses thermal paste, not liquid metal, so there's nothing to run. What matters is clear space above the big vent, or beside it if it's lying down.

How often does Xbox thermal paste need replacing?

There's no timer. Book it when the console runs hot or loud even with plenty of space around it: that's the sign the dust and the paste need doing.

Do you charge for diagnosis?

No fix, no fee. If you go ahead with the repair, the diagnosis is included. If we diagnose it and you decide not to go ahead, there's a £35 diagnostic fee.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. The cooling work doesn't touch the storage, so your games and saves stay where they are.

Can I post my Xbox in from outside the UK?

No. Console repairs are a UK-only service: London drop-off by appointment, or mail-in from anywhere in the UK.
