These are the HDMI faults people describe to us most. They don't all have the same cause, which is why we check before we fix.
TV says “No signal”
The console powers on, the light is on and the fan spins, but the TV gets nothing. The classic sign of a damaged port or the chip behind it.
No picture, but you can hear it
Menu sounds or game audio over a black screen. The console is running and talking to the TV; the picture side of the connection is what's failing.
White light, black screen
On a PS5 a solid white light means it has started up. If the screen stays black after that, the picture isn't getting out of the console.
Cuts out when the cable moves
Flickers, sparkles or drops out when you touch the lead. A worn port or a lifted pad, and it gets worse every time it happens.
Port feels loose or wobbly
The port is soldered to the mainboard. If the plug moves around in it, the joints have cracked or the port has taken a knock.
Bent or pushed-in pins
Shine a torch into the port. A bent centre tongue or flattened pins means a new port. Don't keep forcing a cable in.
Works on one TV, not another
Often a weak connection that only holds at lower resolutions. Rule out the cable first, then it's worth a diagnosis.
Blue light that never turns white
Usually not HDMI. Sony describes a light stuck on blue as the PS5 freezing during start-up, which tends to be software, storage or power. We'll diagnose it either way.
Port or chip? We find out first
Two parts get the picture out of your console. The HDMI port is the socket the cable plugs into, soldered straight onto the mainboard. Behind it sits a small chip that turns the console's video into an HDMI signal: on a PS5 it's an HDMI encoder chip, on an Xbox it's called a retimer.
A knocked cable, a console pulled off the shelf by its lead, or years of plugging in and out damage the port. A power surge, or plugging the cable in while the console is on, can take out the chip instead. From the sofa both look the same: no signal.
So every HDMI job starts with a diagnosis. We check the port, the pads and tracks around it, and the chip. If it's the port, you pay the fixed price on this page. If it's the chip, or something else, we tell you what it needs and what it costs before we touch it. No fix, no fee: go ahead and the diagnosis is included.

Two minutes of checks before you book

- 2Try a different HDMI input on the TV, or a different TV or monitor.
- 3PS5: with the console off, hold the power button until the second beep to start Safe Mode. Connect the controller by USB and choose Change Video Output. If a picture comes back, the port may be fine.

How much is a PS5 HDMI port repair?
PS5 £74.99, PS5 Slim £74.99 and PS5 Pro £89.99. That's the fixed price to replace the port. If the diagnosis shows the HDMI chip has failed rather than the port, we quote that before doing any work.
How much is an Xbox Series X or Series S HDMI port repair?
Xbox Series X £74.99 and Xbox Series S £69.99. Same process as a PS5: diagnosis, new port, the board around it checked, then a picture test before it goes back.
Do you charge for diagnosis?

How long does an HDMI port repair take?
The repair itself takes 2-3 hours on the bench. Drop it off at the workshop and it's often ready the same day. Posted repairs are turned around once they arrive and we keep you updated. When we're very busy a repair can take up to 7-10 working days, and we'll tell you if that's the case.
How do I know if it's the port or the HDMI chip?
From the outside you often can't. A loose plug, bent pins or a picture that comes and goes with the cable point at the port. No signal on every TV and cable with a port that looks perfect points at the chip. We diagnose before we start and tell you which it is.
My PS5 has a blue light and no picture. Is that the HDMI port?
Usually not. A light that stays blue and never turns white means the PS5 isn't finishing start-up, which Sony treats as the console freezing. That's more often software, storage or power. If the light turns white and the screen stays black, that points at HDMI. Either way, we'll diagnose it.
Can I keep using it with a loose HDMI port?
We'd stop. Each time a loose port moves it can pull the pads underneath off the board, and a lifted pad turns a straightforward port swap into a bigger board repair.
Can you clean it while it's open?
On PS5 and PS5 Pro, yes. Choose “Include Deep Cleaning Service” when you order the HDMI repair and we do both in the same visit.
