PlayStation instead? PS5 overheating is a liquid metal job: PS5 overheating repair

How do you fix an overheating Xbox Series X?

Most overheating Xbox Series X consoles need an internal deep clean and fresh thermal paste: the console is stripped to the cooling assembly, packed dust is cleared from the heatsink and fan, and the dried paste is replaced. At OG Repairs that costs £74.99 for a Series X and £64.99 for a Series S, with a 12-month warranty.

My Xbox fan is really loud. Do I need a new fan?

Usually not. A loud Xbox fan is working flat out because heat can't get away through a dusty heatsink and dried thermal paste. OG Repairs fixes that with the overheating repair, £74.99 on a Series X. The technician checks the fan while it's open and only quotes a replacement if it has actually failed.

Should an Xbox Series X stand up or lie flat?

Either way is fine. Microsoft designed the Series X to run stood up or lying down, and it uses thermal paste rather than liquid metal, so nothing inside can run. What matters, OG Repairs advises, is clear space around the big vent and keeping the console out of closed cabinets.

Symptoms

Signs your Xbox is overheating

Heat faults creep up on you. These are the things people tell us when they bring an Xbox in.

  • “Your console overheated”

The Xbox tells you it got too hot, asks you to check it isn't in a cabinet or direct sun, and shuts down. Once on a hot day is a warning. Regularly, with plenty of space around it, means the cooling inside isn't keeping up.

  • Shuts down mid-game

Off without warning, usually in long sessions or demanding games, and often fine again once it has cooled down.

  • Fan you can hear from the next room

A roar that never settles, even on the home screen, is the fan working flat out to push heat through a heatsink packed with dust.

  • Very hot air from the top vent

Warm air out of the top is normal. Air that's uncomfortably hot, with the fan roaring, means heat is building up inside.

  • Clean outside, still hot

Thermal paste dries and cracks with every heat cycle and stops moving heat into the heatsink. A console that's spotless outside can still run hot.

  • Rattling, grinding or clicking

Book the overheating repair. The technician checks the fan while it's open, and if the fan itself has failed they'll quote a replacement before doing anything.

  • Turns off cold, or won't turn back on

That points at power, not cooling, which is why we diagnose first.

  • No picture at all

Console on but the TV says no signal is an HDMI fault, not heat.

What's going on

Why Xboxes overheat: dust and dried thermal paste

An Xbox gets rid of heat in three steps: from the processor, through a layer of thermal paste, into a heatsink, then out with the fan. Overheating means one of those links has stopped working.

The paste is the first to go. It dries out and cracks with years of heat cycles and stops passing heat into the heatsink, so the chip runs hotter and the fan spins harder. At the same time dust packs into the heatsink fins, where a hoover on the vents can't reach. Either one is enough to trigger the overheat warning; most consoles we open have both.

The fix is the same on a Series X, Series S, One X and One S: we open it up, clear the dust out of the heatsink and fan, scrape off the old paste and apply fresh thermal paste, then test it under load. Xboxes use paste, not the liquid metal a PS5 uses, so there's nothing to run and it's fine stood up or lying down.

A loud fan is almost always the fan working flat out because the heat can't get away, and this repair is what quietens it. The technician checks the fan while the console is open, and in the rarer case that the fan itself has failed, they'll quote a replacement before doing anything extra: no fix, no fee.

No fix, no fee

Go ahead with the repair and the diagnosis is included free. Decide not to, and there's a £35 diagnostic fee. Either way you know what's wrong and what it costs before any work starts.

Overheating repair (internal deep clean)

  • Console opened to the cooling assembly
  • Dust cleared from the heatsink fins and fan
  • Old thermal paste off, fresh paste on
  • Fixes heat warnings, shutdowns and a roaring fan
  • Tested under load before it goes back

Ultrasonic exterior clean

  • Shell and outer panels cleaned in an ultrasonic tank
  • Vent slats, seams and port surrounds come back close to new
  • Cosmetic: does nothing for temperatures
  • Good for a grubby console that runs fine
  • Can be done in the same visit

Before you book

Quick checks before you book

  1. 1Give it room: clear space around the vents, nothing sitting on top of a Series X, and not inside a closed cabinet.
  2. 2Keep it off carpet and soft surfaces, and out of direct sun.
  3. 3With it unplugged, hoover the outside of the vents gently. Don't blow compressed air into the fan and spin it up.
  4. 4Still loud, still hot, still shutting down with plenty of space around it? The problem is inside, and that's this repair.
While it's with us

Want the outside looking new as well?

This repair is the inside job. Our ultrasonic exterior clean is the cosmetic one: the shell and outer panels go into an ultrasonic tank and the vent slats, seams and port surrounds come back close to new. It doesn't touch the cooling. Booking two repairs, like overheating and an HDMI port? Ask about a deal when you book.

Questions people ask

How much is an Xbox Series X overheating repair?

£74.99. That's the full overheating repair: deep clean of the heatsink and fan, old paste scraped off and fresh thermal paste on, tested under load. It's also the repair to book for a loud Series X fan. If the technician finds anything else, like a failed fan, they quote it before doing any work.

How much is an Xbox Series S thermal paste replacement?

£64.99, as part of the same overheating repair: strip-down, dust cleared from the heatsink and fan, and fresh thermal paste.

Do you fix overheating Xbox One X and One S consoles?

Yes. Xbox One X is £49.99 and Xbox One S is £49.99, for the deep clean and thermal paste replacement.

Do you charge for diagnosis?

No fix, no fee. If you go ahead with the repair, the diagnosis is included free. If we diagnose it and you decide not to go ahead, there's a £35 diagnostic fee. Either way you know exactly what's wrong and what it costs before any work starts.

Why is my Xbox Series X overheating?

Usually dust packed into the heatsink and fan, and thermal paste that has dried out. The Series X pulls air in underneath and pushes it out of the big vent on top, so anything sitting on that vent, or a closed cabinet, makes it worse. If it overheats with plenty of space around it, the cause is inside.

Is it normal for an Xbox Series X to get hot?

Warm air from the top vent is normal: that's the heat leaving the console. Overheat warnings, shutdowns, or a fan that roars on the home screen are not, and those mean the cooling inside needs attention.

Should an Xbox Series X stand up or lie flat?

Either. Microsoft designed it to work both ways, and it uses thermal paste, not liquid metal, so there's nothing to run. What matters is that the big vent has clear space above it, or beside it if it's lying down.

My Xbox fan is really loud. Which repair do I book?

The overheating repair: Xbox Series X £74.99, Series S £64.99. A loud Xbox fan is the console working flat out to push heat through a dusty heatsink and dried-out thermal paste, and the deep clean with fresh paste is what quietens it. If the fan itself has failed, the technician quotes a replacement before doing anything extra.

Can overheating damage an Xbox?

The console shuts itself down to protect itself, so one shutdown won't kill it. Months of running hot puts strain on the board and the fan, though, so it's best to sort it before anything else fails.

How often should Xbox thermal paste be replaced?

There's no fixed schedule. Book it when the console runs hotter or louder than it used to, or warns you about heat with plenty of space around it. Consoles kept in dusty rooms or near pets tend to need it sooner.

How long does it take?

The overheating repair takes 2-3 hours on the bench. Standard turnaround is 1 to 3 working days once it's with us, dropped off or posted in. Need it back the same day? That's possible with our priority service*. If the technician finds a part needs replacing, like a fan, they tell you how long it adds. When we're very busy a repair can take up to 7-10 working days, and we'll tell you if that's the case. (*A priority fee applies, and it depends on the fault, parts and how busy the workshop is. Ask the team when you book.)

Will my Xbox be back before GTA 6?

GTA VI is out on 19 November. Standard turnaround is 1 to 3 working days once it's with us, but the weeks before a big launch are our busiest, so the earlier you book, the safer. Book a drop-off or post it in, and we'll tell you when to expect it back.

Do you fix overheating Xboxes near me in London?

Our workshop is at Unit 9, Hatcham Road, London SE15 1TR, just off the Old Kent Road and about 10 minutes' walk from South Bermondsey station. Visits are by appointment, so book a free drop-off slot first. Not in London? Post it in from anywhere in the UK.

Can I post my Xbox in?

Yes, from anywhere in the UK. Choose your console above and pay online. Add a prepaid tracked label at checkout and you'll get a QR code to show at the Post Office, so there's nothing to print. It comes back to you tracked, free. Console repairs are a UK service, so we can't accept consoles posted from abroad.

Can I get the HDMI port fixed at the same time?

Yes. We do both in one visit, with the HDMI repair priced on its own page. Ask about a deal when you book two repairs.

Is this the same as your ultrasonic deep clean?

No. The overheating repair is the internal deep clean: heatsink, fan and thermal paste. The ultrasonic exterior clean is cosmetic, for the shell and panels, and does nothing for temperatures.

Will I lose my games and saves?

No. The cooling work doesn't touch the storage, so your games and saves stay where they are. Every repair carries our 12-month warranty.

Not worth fixing?

If the repair costs more than the console is worth to you, we'll buy it as it is. Or skip the wait with a refurbished console, tested and with a 12-month warranty.
