Xbox One X roaring, running hot or shutting itself down mid-game? We open it up, clear the dust out of the heatsink and fan, and replace the dried-out thermal paste.
Why an Xbox One overheats
Years of dust packed into the heatsink fins, where a hoover on the vents can't reach, and thermal paste that has dried out and cracked so heat stops moving into the heatsink. Most Xbox Ones we open have both.
What we do
- Diagnose it first. Go ahead and the diagnosis is included: no fix, no fee.
- Strip it down to the cooling assembly and clear the packed dust from the heatsink and fan.
- Scrape off the old paste and apply fresh thermal paste.
- Reassemble and test it under load.
- Photos or video of the inside, before and after, on request.
Loud fan? This is the repair to book. The technician checks the fan while it's open, and if the fan itself has failed they quote a replacement before doing anything extra.
For the outside of the console, see our ultrasonic exterior clean. Symptoms, causes and every Xbox price: Xbox overheating repair.
Repair time 2-3 hours on the bench. 12-month warranty on the work.

About this repair
An overheating Xbox One X is almost always an inside problem: dust packed into the heatsink and fan, and a worn thermal paste layer between the processor and the heatsink. We strip it down to the cooling assembly, clear the dust and renew the thermal paste for £49.99. Typical repair time is 2-3 hours once it is on our bench. The service is covered by our 12-month repair warranty.
Signs you need this repair
- Overheating warnings on screen
- Fan loud or running flat out all the time
- Shutting down mid-game
- Slowdown or stutter once the console warms up
What causes it
- Dust packed into the heatsink fins and on the fan blades, which blocks the airflow
- Thermal paste that has dried out and stopped moving heat into the heatsink
- A console kept in an enclosed cabinet with little space around the vents
How we fix it
- We open your Xbox One X and strip it down to the cooling assembly
- Packed dust is cleared out of the heatsink fins and off the fan
- The old, dried paste is removed and fresh thermal paste is applied to the processor
- We reassemble and test it under load to check temperatures and fan noise
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a clean on the outside enough to stop my Xbox One X overheating?
Usually not. The dust that causes overheating sits inside on the heatsink fins and fan, and the thermal paste is under the heatsink, so the console has to be opened up to fix it.
What if the fan itself is faulty?
A fan that rattles, grinds or will not spin up needs replacing rather than cleaning. That is a separate service and we tell you before doing anything extra.
How often should a Xbox One X have this done?
There is no fixed schedule. Dust build-up depends on the room, pets and how much the console is used. If it is getting louder or hotter than it used to, it is due.
How long will the repair take?
We aim to complete repairs as safely and as soon as possible, however note it can take up to 3-5 days or longer depending on parts availability. When we're busy, a repair or upgrade can be delayed by up to 7-10 working days - we do everything we can to avoid that and keep you updated.
How do I send my console in?
As soon as you have completed your order we will send you a confirmation email. In the UK that includes your prepaid tracked label (if you chose one at checkout) - a QR code to use at your local Post Office. Outside the UK we send our workshop address and shipping instructions so you can post your console in. Once repaired, we ship it back to you tracked at no charge - UK and international.
Is there a warranty?
We offer a 12 month warranty on all repairs carried out at OG Repairs.
Can you repair a modified console?
Yes, let's see what's possible.
Do you send proof of the repair?
Yes - we send photos and a before/after video showing the fault fixed, so you can be confident in the work before your device is even back in your hands.
Can I drop it off in person?
Yes - book a drop-off at our London workshop (Unit 9, Hatcham Road, London, SE15 1TR); visits are by appointment. Console repairs are a UK-only service, so mail-in is available from anywhere in the UK.
What payment methods do you accept?
All major cards, plus Klarna, Clearpay, Apple Pay and Google Pay - so you can spread the cost with interest-free instalments.
