Controller Buttons Not Working? Causes and Fixes for PS5 and Xbox

By the OG Repairs workshop team, LondonPublished 2 min read

Why are my controller buttons not working?

When a controller button stops registering, the usual causes are dirt on the contact under the button, a worn conductive pad or a lifted membrane. Check it first in a free gamepad tester. If the input never shows, the controller needs opening; at OG Repairs a PS5 DualSense button repair is £24.99, a fixed price with a 12-month warranty.

Key facts

  • A button that never registers is usually a contact problem inside the controller, not the button cap itself.
  • A free online gamepad tester shows whether the controller sends the press at all, which rules the game and the console in or out.
  • Unresponsive bumpers and back paddles are often a worn micro-switch rather than dirt.
  • PS5, Xbox, DualSense Edge and pro controllers all have fixed-price button repairs.
  • Controllers are accepted by post from anywhere in the world, with a 12-month warranty on the repair.

First, check it's the controller

  1. Open a gamepad tester in a browser and connect the controller by USB.
  2. Press the button slowly, then quickly, then at different angles. Watch whether the input lights up every time.
  3. If it works in the tester but not in a game, check the game's button mapping and your console's accessibility settings.
  4. If it never lights up, or only when pressed hard, the fault is inside the controller.

What usually causes it

Under every face button sits a rubber membrane with a conductive pad that touches contacts on the board. Dirt, a dried spill or wear on that pad stops the circuit closing, so the press is missed or only lands when you push hard. Bumpers, back paddles and Edge buttons use small micro-switches, which wear out with heavy use.

What the symptom tells us

  • Works only when pressed hard: dirty or worn conductive pad.
  • Works sometimes, misses sometimes: contamination on the contacts, often after a spill.
  • Several buttons dead at once: a ribbon cable or board fault, which we diagnose before quoting.
  • Bumper or paddle with no click: a worn micro-switch.

What the repair costs

The controller is opened, the membranes and contacts are cleaned, worn parts and switches are replaced, and every input is tested before it goes back. No fix, no fee, and a 12-month warranty on the work.

Unresponsive button FAQs

Can a button that stopped working be fixed?

Almost always. The fault is usually a dirty or worn contact, membrane or switch, all of which can be cleaned or replaced. If it turns out to be a board fault, we tell you what it needs before any work.

Will a firmware update fix unresponsive buttons?

It's worth updating, but a button that doesn't show in a gamepad tester is a hardware fault, and an update won't change that.

Can I post my controller in?

Yes, from anywhere in the world. In the UK, add a prepaid Royal Mail label at checkout and show the QR code at any Post Office. It comes back to you tracked, free.

How long does it take?

Standard turnaround is 1-3 working days once it's with us. For a same-day repair, get in touch with the team about a priority slot before you book.
