How often does a PS5 need cleaning?
There's no fixed schedule, because it depends on the room: dust, pets and smoke all speed it up. Hoover the outside vents gently whenever you see dust building up. Book the internal clean when the fan gets louder than it used to, the case gets hotter, or you see too-hot warnings with plenty of space around it.
Why a PS5 clean includes the liquid metal
The PS5 uses liquid metal, not thermal paste, between the processor and the heatsink. Over years of heat it can dry out and move, especially on consoles stood upright, and that leaves a hot spot on the chip that clearing dust can't fix.
So our PS5 deep clean does both: the dust comes out of the heatsink and fan, the old metal comes off, and fresh liquid metal goes on, dammed and levelled. We don't swap it for paste, because the PS5 was designed around liquid metal.
What you can safely do yourself
- Give it about 10cm of clear space around the vents, out of closed cabinets.
- Stand it on a hard, flat surface, never a rug or carpet.
- With it unplugged, hoover the outside of the vents gently with a low-powered vacuum and a brush attachment.
- Original PS5 only: Sony's teardown shows two dust-catcher holes under the side cover that you can vacuum with the cover off.
- Don't blast compressed air into the fan. It spins the fan far faster than it's made for and pushes dust deeper into the fins.
How long does a PS5 deep clean take?
