PS4 Thermal Paste Replacement: What It Costs and What It Fixes
By the OG Repairs workshop team, LondonPublished 3 min read
How much is a PS4 thermal paste replacement?
At OG Repairs a PS4 thermal paste replacement is £49.99 for the original PS4, £49.99 for the PS4 Slim and £54.99 for the PS4 Pro. It's the full overheating repair: dust cleared from the heatsink and fan, old paste off, fresh paste on, tested. Bench time is 2-3 hours, with a 12-month warranty.
Key facts
- PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro use thermal paste on the processor. Years of heat dry it out, and dried paste stops moving heat into the heatsink.
- The PS4 Pro's jet-engine fan noise is usually dust and dried paste, not a broken fan.
- Every PS4 overheating repair includes the internal deep clean of the heatsink and fan.
- If the technician finds the fan itself has failed, they quote it before doing anything extra.
- Console repairs are UK only: London drop-off by appointment or UK mail-in, returned tracked and free.
Is a thermal paste replacement worth it on a PS4?
Usually, yes, if the console is loud, hot or shutting itself down. On a console this age, dried paste and a heatsink packed with dust are the usual cause, and the repair costs a fraction of a replacement console. Your games and saves stay put. If we find a fault that isn't worth fixing, we tell you before you spend anything.
Signs your PS4 needs it
- The fan roars as soon as a game starts, and it's got louder over the months.
- The top of the console gets hot to the touch.
- A warning that the PS4 is too hot, or it switches itself off mid-game.

What the repair involves
- We diagnose first: fan, heatsink, paste and anything else we spot. If it needs more than you booked, we tell you and wait for your OK.
- The console is stripped down to the cooling assembly.
- Packed dust comes out of the heatsink fins and off the fan blades.
- The dried paste is scraped off the processor and fresh thermal paste goes on.
- It's rebuilt and tested under load, with photos or video of the work on request.
What you can do at home
- Give it a few inches of clear space all round, out of closed cabinets.
- Stand it on a hard, flat surface, never carpet.
- With it unplugged, hoover the outside of the vents gently with a brush attachment.
- Don't blast compressed air into the fan: it spins it far faster than it's made for and pushes dust deeper in.
That helps airflow. It can't shift the dust packed inside the heatsink or fix dried paste, and that's what makes most PS4s loud.
How long does it take?
The repair takes 2-3 hours on the bench. Standard turnaround is 1-3 working days once it's with us. Same day is possible with our priority service: a priority fee applies, and it depends on the fault, parts and how busy the workshop is, so ask the team when you book. When we're very busy it can take up to 7-10 working days, and we'll tell you if so.
