PS5 Triggers Not Working or Sticking: Causes and Fixes (L2, R2, Adaptive Triggers)
By the OG Repairs workshop team, LondonPublished 2 min read
Why are my PS5 triggers not working?
If L2 or R2 feels stuck, weak or doesn't register, first check trigger effects in Settings, Accessories, Controllers, and try another game. If it still misbehaves, a spill, grime or a damaged part in the trigger mechanism is the usual cause. OG Repairs repairs DualSense triggers for £24.99, a fixed price with a 12-month warranty.
Key facts
- The DualSense's adaptive triggers push back with a small motor and gears, so they feel different from game to game. That's by design.
- A trigger that feels stiff in one game and fine in another is usually the game's trigger effect, not a fault.
- PS5 has a Trigger Effect Intensity setting (Settings, Accessories, Controllers) you can turn down or off to compare.
- A trigger that sticks down, crunches, or never registers on any game is a hardware fault and needs opening.
- Fixed-price trigger repairs for DualSense, DualSense Edge and SCUF Reflex, with a 12-month warranty.
Check these before you book
- Try the trigger in a second game, and in a gamepad tester in a browser: the tester shows how far the press registers, from 0 to full.
- On the PS5, go to Settings, Accessories, Controllers and set Trigger Effect Intensity to Off. If the trigger feels normal again, the stiffness was the game's effect.
- Update the controller from the same menu, then test again.
- If the trigger sticks down, grinds, or the tester never reaches full press, the fault is inside.
What goes wrong inside a PS5 trigger
Spills are the most common cause: a drink dries inside the trigger housing and the trigger sticks or springs back slowly. Grime builds up the same way. The adaptive trigger also has a small motor, gears and a return spring, and a knock or heavy use can damage one of them, shown as a crunch or a dead spot.
Symptoms and what they usually mean
- Sticks down or returns slowly: residue in the mechanism.
- Crunching or grinding under resistance: a damaged part in the adaptive mechanism.
- No resistance in any game: the adaptive mechanism isn't engaging.
- Registers only part of the way: a dirty or worn sensor contact.
What a trigger repair costs
The controller is opened, the trigger mechanism cleaned and repaired, worn parts replaced, and the trigger tested across its full travel before it goes back. No fix, no fee, and a 12-month warranty on the work.
| Controller | Trigger repair | Every button and trigger |

| PS5 DualSense (L2 / R2) | £24.99 | £29.99 |
