PS5 Won't Turn On: Is a No-Power Repair Worth It?

By the OG Repairs workshop team, LondonPublished 3 min read

Is it worth repairing a PS5 that won't turn on?

Usually, yes. Most PS5s that won't power on have a failed internal power supply or a short on the board, and both can be repaired. At OG Repairs a PS5 no-power repair is £149.99, diagnosis included when you go ahead, with a 12-month warranty. If it isn't worth fixing, we tell you before you spend anything.

Key facts

  • PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S all have the power supply built in, so a dead console is usually the supply or the board.
  • We test the supply on its own first, then the board, so a good part isn't replaced by mistake.
  • PS5 £149.99, PS5 Pro £149.99. A PS5 Slim that won't power on is repaired by quote.
  • No-power repairs usually take 3-5 working days with our specialist board technician.
  • Your games and saves normally come back as they were: the repair doesn't involve the storage.

Try this before you book

  1. Unplug the power lead at both ends for a minute, then plug it straight into a wall socket. No extension lead or surge strip.
  2. Try a different power lead. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S use the same two-pin figure-of-eight lead as plenty of TVs and speakers.
  3. Unplug everything else: USB drives, headsets, controllers on charge.
  4. Still dead? Leave it unplugged and stop trying it. Repeated attempts on a shorted board don't help.

What it does when you press the button

  • No lights, no sound, nothing: often the power supply, sometimes a short on the board stopping the supply from starting.
  • One beep, then nothing: the PS5 has seen the button press but can't start, which points at a power fault.
  • Turns on, then straight off: protection kicking in, from a supply that can't hold up or a short on the board.
  • Dead after a power cut or surge: the surge can take out the supply, or get past it to the board.
  • Light on, fan spinning, but no picture: that isn't a power fault. It's usually HDMI.
  • Switches itself off mid-game but starts again: that's often heat, not power.

Power supply or board?

From the outside you can't tell. A failed supply usually means no lights, no fan and no beep, often after a surge or with age, and it's fixed with a replacement supply. A short on the board pulls the supply down and needs board-level repair. We test the supply on its own first, so a good part isn't replaced by mistake.

PS5 won't turn on: what we'd tell you
SituationWhat we'd tell you
Dead after a power cut or surgeUsually the supply, sometimes the board. Worth diagnosing.
Beeps once, then nothingA power fault, and exactly what this repair covers.
Liquid spilled into itTell us when you book. Liquid can damage more than the power circuit, so we diagnose and give you the price first.
Opened or repaired somewhere else beforeTell us when you book. We diagnose it the same way and tell you what we find before any work.
You'd rather not repair itWe can buy it from you as it is through Sell Your Tech.
Go ahead with the repair and the diagnosis is included. Decide not to and there's a £35 diagnostic fee, so you always know what's wrong first.

How long does a PS5 no-power repair take?

Usually 3-5 working days once it's with us. No-power repairs go to our specialist board technician, and tracing a board fault takes longer than swapping a supply. Depending on the fault, same day may be possible with our priority service for a fee, so ask the team. We keep you updated throughout.

Posting it from elsewhere in the UK? Add a prepaid Royal Mail tracked label at checkout and you get a QR code to show at any Post Office, so there's nothing to print. It comes back to you tracked, free. When the workshop is very busy a repair can take up to 7-10 working days, and we'll tell you if so.

PS5 no-power FAQs

My PS5 beeps once and then nothing happens. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. One beep with no light or fan means the console has seen the button press but can't start, which points at a power fault. That's what the no-power repair covers.

It died after a power cut. Is it the power supply?

Often, but not always. A surge can kill the supply outright or get through it to the board. We test the supply on its own first so you know which it was.

Will I lose my games and saves?

Power repairs don't involve the storage, so the console normally comes back with everything as it was.

Can I post my PS5 in?

Yes, from anywhere in the UK, and it comes back tracked, free. Console repairs are a UK service, so we can't accept consoles posted from abroad.
